Politico EU, the analysis website for European issues, recently revealed the U.S. scheme for redrawing the commanding map to put Greenland under U.S. Northern Command jurisdiction in order to take control over the island from Denmark.
The website expressed concern that the shift would become a symbolic gesture that would more closely align the island with the U.S. and predicted that it could also help the U.S. broaden its “Golden Dome” missile shield which opens the possibility of increasing network of sensors.
The switch, as a part of gaining the ownership over Greenland, is the most concrete step yet in the current U.S. administration’s months-long effort, it continued. NATO has been uneasy over the U.S. administration that refuse to rule out military action to seize the island.
It highlighted the fact that the U.S. administration has often talked about the strategic importance of Greenland for their security and its assertion about the criticality of Greenland which is located in the North Atlantic in stepping up missile defense programs and monitoring Russia and Chinese shipping in the Arctic.
It reported the remarks by French President Macron who said Greenland is “not for the taking” and his not-so-veiled swipe at U.S. administration’s continued threats to annex the island. He emphasized during his opening speech at the UN Ocean Conference that “Greenland is not for taking, and neither are Antarctica nor the high seas for sale”.
