U.S. Needs to Approach Taiwan Issue with Discretion

Responding to the stand and statements made respectively by the President and the Secretary of State of the United States over the matter of defending Taiwan and supporting its admission to the UN system, China has recently reiterated its resolve to oppose and reject the acts of interference in its internal affairs by outside forces and to firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the press conference held in Rome, Italy and during the talk with the U.S. Secretary of State, Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, affirmed that there would be no other prospect for Taiwan than accepting unification with the Chinese mainland, nor would there be any other internationally recognized status than accepting that it is a part of China.

He also warned that any slightest deviation by the U.S. from the issue of Taiwan would incur overall collapse of China-U.S. relations.

Spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of State Council of China and other Chinese major media noted that Taiwan is not qualified for joining UN because it is a part of China and that if the U.S. continues to use “Taiwan card”, its interest will suffer a great loss, to say nothing of destruction of the China-U.S. relations.

They emphasized that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will readily launch an action if the U.S. is so eager to play a war gamble over the issue of Taiwan and that the U.S. needs to bear in mind that its support for or pursuit of “independence of Taiwan” would mean paving a path leading directly to its doom.

China takes Taiwan as an inseparable part of its territory and consistently maintains the position of zero tolerance for any interference of outside forces with regard to the Taiwan issue.

However, while claiming outwardly that “ ‘One China’ policy of the U.S.” remains unchanged and it fully understands the Chinese concern over Taiwan issue, the U.S. supports and protects the separatist forces of Taiwan behind the screen, rendering them both political and military aid.

The American interference in the issue of Taiwan is getting ever more brazen nowadays.

In July, the U.S. landed its military planes on Taiwan and in August, it announced its plan for arms sale worth 750 million US$ to Taiwan by invoking “Taiwan Relations Act”, an anti-China legislation. Worse still, the U.S. staged joint military exercises with its allies, while frequently dispatching battleships including aircraft carriers into the waters near Taiwan on the pretext of ensuring “freedom of navigation.”

On the other hand, the U.S., in disregard of the agreements reached between China and the U.S., is elevating the political relations with Taiwan by lowering the threshold for limiting mutual visits with Taiwan to dispatch government officials, and openly infringing upon the sovereignty of China by asking its allies to do the same and to support Taiwan’s admission to the international organizations etc.

Obvious is the American ulterior intention of persistently interfering in the Taiwan issue under the pretext of coping with “provocation” by someone.

Its intention is to constantly wear and weaken the strength of China by reducing Taiwan completely into an anti-China outpost serving its strategy and furthermore, to perpetuate the territorial division and tear China apart.

We have already made clear our stand that on no account is the situation of Taiwan irrelevant to the situation on the Korean peninsula and that we will continue to watch very closely the American move for holding hegemony over the issue of Taiwan in a broader context of correlation with the situation on the Korean peninsula.

The United States would be well advised to put an immediate end to its infringement upon the sovereignty of other countries and its interference in their internal affairs.
