Provocative and Dangerous Navigation

West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

Recent military tension between Russia and the U.S. in the waters of the Black Sea has become the focus of the international society.

From the end of October to the beginning of November, guided missile destroyer “Porter” of the 6th Fleet of the U.S. Navy and command ship “Mount Whitney” called “floating general staff” entered the Black Sea and conducted unplanned exercises with NATO, causing a serious concern in Russia.

President Putin, at a consultative meeting with the leading members in the field of the armed forces and the munitions industry, warned that Russia is watching closely the movements of the U.S. warships penetrated into the Black Sea through the sighting telescopes of Russia’s relevant weapon systems. Vice Foreign Minister stressed that Russia would counter any provocation by the U.S. and NATO which are trying to test the will and the readiness of Russia.

The Russian Defence Ministry, on its part, branded the U.S. move as an act of destroying the regional stability, and expressed its firm stand not to tolerate an act of provocation by the U.S. warships. After that, Black Sea fleet of Russia conducted exercises to launch missile and to intercept missile attack, demonstrating the will to firmly guarantee the national security of Russia by force.

This year alone, the U.S. is escalating military activities aimed at Russia by conducting the largest-ever joint military exercises in succession with NATO including “Defender Europe 2021” and “Sea Breeze 2021”.

Experts are expressing concerns that the Black Sea is turning into a new theatre of confrontation between Russia and the U.S., and that this showdown between Russia and the U.S. would develop into a nuclear war and the Third World War.

Hostile acts, which are committed by the U.S. under the signboard of “ensuring peace” and “freedom of navigation” to cover up its ambition for hegemony, will lead to a backlash and a strong reaction from Russia.
