The wild pear tree is a high-yield variety of fruit tree quite high in per-hectare output, which grows well in any areas of Korea and has high resistance to harmful insects.
But, as it required much labour to gather its seeds and the germination ratio was very low, it was regarded as a knotty problem to manure and cultivate the plant.
An official, however, kept thinking of how to produce saplings of the tree that would grow fast with less seeds.
The official is Kim Myong Gil, department director of the Pyongyang Municipal Rural Economy Committee, who found out a new method of producing several saplings from each sapling while increasing the rooting rate of grafts put into sapling roots.
On the basis of this method, he established a scientific method of cultivating and manuring the saplings of the tree, thus laying the scientific and technical foundation for spreading the plant across the country.
The last method now pays off greatly in practice.
At present, several units in Pyongyang produce tens of thousands of such saplings every year by means of the method.
Some time ago, Kim was awarded a doctorate.
