President Kim Il Sung wrote in his reminiscences With the Century :
“The thought of ‘Aim High,’ being prepared for the three contingencies, the idea of gaining comrades, and two pistols―this was all I received from my father. My heritage was such that it portended great hardship and sacrifice for me. Nevertheless, there could be no better heritage for me.”
Two pistols were a precious legacy Kim Il Sung inherited from his father Kim Hyong Jik, an indomitable revolutionary fighter.
Early in Juche 21 (1932), when he embarked on small-scale guerrilla warfare for the armed struggle against the Japanese imperialists, Kim Il Sung said to his comrades: My father did not serve in the Righteous Volunteers or in the Independence Army, but he had these pistols with him until the day of his death because he considered armed resistance to be the highest form of struggle to achieve national independence. When I received the two pistols, I made a firm resolve to do what he had desired in his place. Let us start our march for independence with the two pistols to help us. Now we have two pistols, but think of the day when they will multiply by two hundred, two thousand and then twenty thousand.
With the pistols as a valuable asset, he founded the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army on April 25, 1932, and led the bloody anti-Japanese armed struggle to victory by applying unique guerrilla tactics. By doing so, he recorded in the history of the Korean revolution such an immutable truth that powerful arms guarantee the destiny of a country and the people’s wellbeing and rosy future.
The revolutionary armed forces of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which took the first step with the two pistols and have followed the road of victory for over 90 years, have developed into an invincible army equipped with latest offensive means, demonstrating their might on the forefront of defending the country and building a prosperous country.
