Apple-picking in September is in full swing in the Kosan Combined Fruit Farm in Kangwon Province.
As the successor to the state-owned orchard founded in April Juche 36 (1947), the farm has been turned into a leading fruit producer in the DPRK, with an area of thousands of hectares.
It mainly cultivates such superior species as Chollyong , Kumgang and Phurunsagwa .
It has planted apple trees with good taste and high productivity on a long-term basis and manured and cultivated them on a scientific and technological basis, thus raising the scientific and intensive level of fruit farming.
Pig farms and families in branch farms increased the production of manure and realized the food production cycle of fruit farming and stockbreeding by growing many domestic animals including cattle, pig, goat and rabbit.
It improves sugar content of fruit and weight per apple by conducting all the cultivating processes, including pruning, thinning out of fruits, spraying of insecticides, manuring and watering, while increasing the area of orchards.
It produced tens of tons of quality and tasty apples per hectare despite unfavourable weather conditions by making strenuous efforts to minimize damage from insects and putting the manuring and cultivation of fruit trees on a scientific footing.
Based on the judgment of estimated yields, the farm chose the picking period according to the fruit species, and is now conducting apple harvest on a full scale.
The Kosan Fruit Processing Factory (inaugurated in September 2020) produces various goods, including canned apple and apple liquor and chips.
