Mt Myohyang located in the northwestern part of the DPRK is one of the celebrated mountains. It is famous for its superb scenery.
It sprawls over 375km 2 and runs well over a hundred kilometres in circumference, unfolding diverse, magnificent and splendid landscape.
It boasts a myriad of oddly shaped peaks and rocks including Piro Peak rising 1 909m above sea level, deep ravines and high cliffs, crystal-clear water and waterfalls, and dense forests, graced by lovely fragrance of flowers, lush foliage in summer, autumnal tints, snowscape in winter, birds' twitter and murmur of streams.
The valleys of Sangwon, Manphok, Chonthae and Chilsong and the Piro Peak area are the most attractive.
The Sangwon Valley named after the Sangwon Hermitage that sits at an altitude of some 500m on the mountainside is a key attraction for its unusual and dense scenic spots as it is surrounded by thick forests, waterfalls and pools on gigantic rocks, mysteriously-shaped rocks and peaks, and historical sites such as the Pulyong Hermitage and Chuksong Temple.
The mountain area is home to a large number of species of plants, ranging from lowland species to highland species, which vary in colours according to seasons and in flowering time unfolding spectacles all year round.
It is also inhabited by scores of species of wild animals including tiger, musk deer, hare, badger and raccoon dog, more than 130 species of beautiful and rare birds such as woodpecker and cuckoo, and fishes like rainbow trout, char and minnow.
In addition, there are the International Friendship Exhibition House, Myohyangsan History Museum, Pyongyang Municipal Myohyangsan Children's Mountaineering Camp, camp for tourists to Piro Peak and Hyangsan Hotel. Tourists can climb along the safe paths up the Sangwon and Manphok valleys and Piro Peak, having a break at rest places and pavilions.
The mountain area was placed on the world biosphere reserve list in May 2009.
The mountain draws numerous tourists every year.
