Rope-skipping is one of the Korean children's folk games that is played by skipping over a moving or fixed rope in different ways to the tune of music.
As to the kinds and playing methods of folk games, a document in the 18th century says that children play with a string, skipping over it turning in a circle. Haedongjukji , a book compiled in the early 20th century, says: According to folklore, children play with a rope with each of its ends held by a hand, jumping over it no less than 1 000 times. As a children's game, it helps strengthen leg muscles and build up physique. It is called julnomki (rope-skipping).
The play evolved steadily according to the material and elasticity of the rope.
The earliest rope was a string made of hemp or rice straw. Colourful pieces of cloth were often woven together to decorate the rope.
In modern times it was supplanted by an elastic rubber rope.
The rope can be skipped alone or with some others together.
When skipping alone, players often compete in skipping more than the opponents after setting the skipping rounds in advance.
In group play, while two children turn a five-or-so-metre-long rope in a circle, standing apart from each other and holding either of the rope ends in hand, other players step into the circle and skip over the rope each time it touches the ground.
As one of the children's popular folk games good for physical exercise and emotional life, this game is performed also in mass gymnastics and artistic performances and other events.
