West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

Employees of the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex take an active part in mass cultural and artistic activities.

The performance of art group members of the complex is widely known throughout Pyongyang for its specific character and high skills and, furthermore, almost all the employees can play at least one musical instrument and sing songs and dance well.

In a word, the complex is always vibrant and songs reverberate through the cultural hall every evening.

“All our artistic group members are talents who can sing songs, dance and play musical instruments very well, though they have not received professional art education,” said Kim Song Sik, director of the hall.

Ordinary workers have acquired high artistic skills in the course of conducting brisk mass cultural and artistic activities and members of the artistic group are those selected from among them, he added.

After finishing daily work, the group members gather at the hall to create a witticism, dramatic sketch and other works with their experienced materials and sing songs by reflecting their life worth living and joy of labour.

“It has been decades since I played the drum with the encouragement of our workteam members. Now I play it better than anyone,” worker Ri Hyang Ran said proudly.

It is said that she is also a famous singer winning great admiration of the people.

And Jang Yon Gon, worker at the casting workshop, is a talent who can display high skills flawlessly not only in playing the guitar and accordion but also in witticism and other narrative works.

Everybody says in unison that he, who was shy with the masses for his timidity, has been able to become a star thanks to the benefit of the mass-based artistic activities.

The group members took part in the Seventh April Spring People’s Art Festival this year to sing about their merry working and life amid applause of many. They won high appraisal for having represented life truthfully.

Kim Song Sik said that the complex encourages all its employees to participate in mass cultural and artistic activities and song diffusers at all workshops help everyone conduct artistic activities competitively and vigorously while learning and sharing experiences.
