In November last year, a woman was transported to the Anju City Hospital in South Phyongan Province in emergency.
She was Kim Ok Gum, aged 50, who was burnt due to an unexpected accident.
Two- and three-degree burn over 50 percent of her whole body, including from front neck to breast and abdomen, and a coma due to burn shock—this was the critical condition of the patient.
All emergency measures were taken immediately.
But the patient didn’t recover her senses, making medical workers’ heart heavy.
Despite emergency measures, the patient’s condition did not show any sign of improvement.
Doctors and nurses started to lose hope for the recovery of her revival passing crisis several times a day.
Looking at them, the deputy director in charge of technology, said: The possibility of revival could be 1% or less than it. But we must not ease our tension since we are the doctors responsible for human life.
The treatment team was reinforced and rational plans came out in succession.
Finally, the life indexes of the patient who had been in the jaws of death became normal one after another.
As her condition started to improve, the medical workers buckled down to treating the burns.
Dripping, applying cardiotonic drug, sedative and all processes were geared like cogwheels. But it took one or two hours usually to treat her.
While observing the capricious condition of the patient, the hospital had at least tens of consultations.
At last, the day of grafting the skin of the patient came.
Upon hearing the news, many people gathered at the operating theatre.
Not only medical workers but also those who visited the hospital volunteered to donate their skin.
When the second skin grafting was to be held dozens of days later, many people donated their blood and skin. There were people who brought various tonics and nutritious foodstuffs.
Thanks to the concern of such people and the devotion of medical workers, the patient recovered her health after 90-odd days.
The medicines used for the recovery of the patient accounted to over 10 000 kinds of more than 10 varieties, blood injected to her was 2 500mL and grafted skin covered 1 500㎠.
Doctors and nurses said to those who congratulated the recovery of the patient as follows: We did what we ought to do.
