The Muan Livestock Farm under the Sungni General Motor Enterprise is located at the foot of a low hill some distance away from the seat of Tokchon City, South Phyongan Province.
The farm is gaining benefits by making active use of methane gas.
It has two fermentation tanks which produce hundreds of cubic metres of methane gas.
Senior engineer Kim Chol Ho said the farm has made effective use of methane gas not only for its management activities but for the employees’ living.
In the farm several tons of excrement of domestic animals come out daily and naturally flow into the fermentation tanks with a temperature of 20℃ to 30℃. They turn into methane gas to be used as a fuel for cooking and heating.
The farm uses methane gas for heating a greenhouse and pigsties covering hundreds of square metres.
Dregs from production of methane gas naturally flow to a sewage treatment plant. As their quality is higher than other manures fermented by common methods, a little of their application makes it possible to improve the fertility of soil and boost crop yields while preventing environmental pollution.
Besides, the farm produces tens of kWh of electricity for its management activities.
It can be said that it is as profitable as killing two birds with one stone.
