Samjiyon City, a mountainous town in Ryanggang Province in the northern part of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a leading potato producer.
While giving field guidance to the city in October Juche 107(2018), the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the Samjiyon Potato FarinaProduction Factory.
He was very pleased to see the potatoes piled up in the potato storehouse and gave an instruction on ensuring scientific accuracy and security in storing potatoes. Then, he touched on the issue of potato production in the city.
At that time, the city was not doing potato farming in accordance with the physiographical features and climatic conditions of the region, but following the farming method of a neighbouring county as it was.
Besides, it had a higher zone and harder muddy land than the neighbouring county and so it was not ensuring the accumulated temperature for growth of crops and the set time properly.
Kim Jong Un said the city should not do the potato farming in the way of following the farming method of other region and of imitating it indiscriminately.
The officials of the city looked back with remorse upon their wrong work attitude with which they had tried to introduce other's experience for no good reason without studying whether it was suited to their region or not.
After a while, Kim Jong Un taught in detail that for a good potato farming in Samjiyon City, it is necessary to improve land, apply liquid manure to the potato fields to increase the fertility of soil, raise the proportion of potato farming done by machines, put the seed storage and production on a scientific basis and keep breeding and introducing high-yielding varieties. And he stressed the need to produce a lot of potato seeds of choice varieties and actively introduce them into potato farming, in other words, to create the farming method of Samjiyon style.
That day, he said with confidence that if the farming method of Samjiyon style is created by dint of science and technology, all farms in the city can produce 40 tons of potatoes per hectare on an average.
Creating its own farming method for ensuring the continuous growth on the basis of having a deep understanding and making study of the conditions and characteristics of the region was a valuable guideline for enabling Samjiyon City to ensure a radical and sustainable increase in the potato production.
