Freshwater fish farming is now brisk in the DPRK.

Breed fish farms across the country secure mother fishes and produce hundreds of millions of fries to send them to fish farms all over the country.

Catfish farms including the Samchon Catfish Farm, Sunchon Catfish Farm and Pyongyang Catfish Farm in which all processes from water management, to feed supply and production are managed by the integrated automatic control system are producing thousands of tons of fish a year.

The country has many fish farms built to suit the regional features like the Sohung Poman Fish Farm, Yomju Youth Fish Farm and Sinhung Fish Farm. They are mass-producing warm water fishes like silver carp, grass fish and goldfish, cold-water fishes like rainbow trout, Brachymystax lenok and char and tropical fishes like catfish and tilapia.

Special fish farms breed terrapin, sturgeon and bullfrog.

Cage-net fish farming and fish farming in paddies are widely encouraged according to the situations of fish farming units.

As they have applied modern production systems like integrated automatic control system and water recirculation system, fish farms are water-saving, site-saving and labour-saving ones maintaining high productivity.

Fishes are reared everywhere if there is water.

The Taedonggang Battery Factory built a fish breeding ground using waste water from production and raise catfish there to improve the dietary life of its employees.

There are tens of thousands of fish farms built in institutions, enterprises, farms and organizations throughout the country.

A nationwide programme has been undertaken to increase the fish resources of the country.

There are many rivers, streams, lakes, pools, swamps and reservoirs in the country. In these places fish stocking stations are built to artificially hatch eggs of anadromous and downstream fishes and stock them with fish as part of the programme to beautify their surrounding scenery and make them teem with fish.

They have caught sweetfish in the Chongchon River, artificially hatched their eggs and stocked it with them, radically increasing fish resources of the river in recent years.

A project is under way to release such fishes as mandarin fish in Lake Yonphung and Lake Thaechon and increase fish resources there.

Char breeding stations are under construction in places with cold water in the northern alpine areas like Jagang and Ryanggang provinces to release chars in scenic spots and pools like Rimyongsu Falls and the surrounding water areas.

Stations are now being organized to produce and release Hucho ishikawai .

Work for putting fish farming on a modern, scientific and intensive basis is pushed ahead on a higher level.

The fish farming sector directs proactive efforts to developing various kinds of assorted feed for different fish species and making efficient fish farming equipment including those for producing floating feed, super fine grinder and automatic feeder.

Fresh and tasty fishes are served everywhere to improve the people’s dietary life. They have a pleasant time, enjoying terrapin, sturgeon and various other fish dishes at the Okryu Restaurant, Chongnyu Restaurant, Pyongyang Taedonggang Fish Restaurant and other public catering establishments.
