Among the first winners of the Natural Science Prize newly instituted this year is Prof. Im Song Jin, PhD and chief of a lab in Physics Faculty of Kim Il Sung University.
He is a scientist and educator who pioneered the field of nonlinear nano optics and developed it onto a world level.
At present the nonlinear optics, a subject of strong interaction between light and nano materials, has rapidly developed to form a new, independent branch of optical science. In particular, the nonlinear nano optics, a cross-disciplinary science embracing nano technology, optics and materials science, draws worldwide attention as it gives a theoretical and methodological basis for the development of information technology, nano technology, new energy technology and new materials technology.
The research team led by Im conducted research into the field of nonlinear nano optics, in the course of which they identified the characteristics of the interaction between light and nano materials, thus laying a foundation for developing information, nano, new energy and new materials technologies.
In recognition of such advances he was twice awarded the February 16 Science and Technology Prize, the top sci-tech prize of the country, emerging as one of its top scientists.
He also contributed several of his papers to an international academic journal, demonstrating the progress of the country’s basic sciences. A prestigious foreign sci-tech publisher released his works in a book form, the first of its kind for a Korean scientist.
He has been listed twice in Who’s Who as a “scientist representing the DPRK” and works as one of the jury of the Optical Society and other academic bodies.
Last year his team developed a highly sophisticated analyzing device badly needed in metallurgical, chemical and other sectors of the economy.
He obtained his doctorate in his twenties and he is now training promising scientists who are all in their twenties and his team is acknowledged as a think-tank in the field of basic sciences.
He participated in several national events for his contribution to the development of science and technology and education of the country and had photos taken with the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un .
“My parents were repatriated to their socialist homeland in the 1960s. They often tell me that I could hardly achieve such success if I was born in a capitalist society. I will produce more research successes to repay the favours shown by the country,” said Im Song Jin.
