A new system has been launched in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to support the education of children with disabilities.
As part of the system, a class for children with hearing impairment has been added to Hwawon Kindergarten No. 2 in Hwasong District, Pyongyang, with teachers and a doctor appointed for the class and the curriculum tailored to improve the children’s intellectual level and emotional state. Multimedia have been worked out to suit children’s psychology, a new textbook of sign language has been published, and hundreds of items of teaching aid and toys have been provided.
As the class is run on a weekly basis, the kindergarten has created sufficient boarding and other living conditions.
The first lesson was given on April 1 to a group of children with disabilities from different districts of the city.
Building on the experience gained in the pilot run of the class at the kindergarten, similar classes are to be opened in kindergartens and schools in each province with due procedures from the following year.
