May 5 is International Day of the Midwife.
Marking the day every year, the International Confederation of Midwives presents a theme that highlights the critical role midwives play in protecting the lives and health of maternal women and newborns, and advocates for various activities aimed to congratulate their medical activities and raise public awareness of them.
The world is facing an unprecedented number of catastrophic crises—natural disasters, armed conflicts, and the ongoing impacts of climate change caused by global warming. These crises expose millions of pregnant women to heightened risks such as unsafe birth in vulnerable facilities.
For this reason, the International Confederation of Midwives set forth this year’s theme of IDM as “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis,” which calls for valuing midwives and raising concern to them so that they could play their part in antenatal, delivery and postnatal care, fetal care and newborn resuscitation care in any crises.
The DPRK gives top priority to protecting the lives and health of its population while directing all its policies to the promotion of public well-being and happiness.
It ensures that all midwives take good care of maternal women and newborns with warm love and professional proficiency, thus bringing pleasure and happiness to all families and communities.
In July last year, when a record downpour hit several island areas of the city of Sinuiju and Uiju County in North Phyongan Province and some parts of Jagang and Ryanggang provinces, it took action to evacuate maternal women, children, old people, sick persons and other victims to Pyongyang and let them lead a comfortable life without any inconvenience. During their stay maternal mothers received medical care at Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, with over 50 babies born.
