One January day in Juche 86 (1997), Han Tok Su, chairman of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), was surprised to see his son, daughter and grandchildren living in the DPRK in Tokyo of Japan.
Chairman Kim Jong Il saw to it that they were sent to congratulate his 90th birthday.
Han Tok Su was deeply moved.
Several days later, he was awarded with Order of Kim Il Sung and the title of honorary academician of socio-political science and received gifts from Kim Jong Il .
On January 29, Kim Jong Il sent him a congratulatory message.
Tears ran down his wrinkled cheeks.
Later, when receiving gratitude from Han Tok Su through Chongryon officials, Kim Jong Il said: We arranged a grand birthday party for Han Tok Su as a token of the mind of President Kim Il Sung who, in his lifetime, had taken warm care of and treasured him and as Han Tok Su has devoted his whole life for the single-hearted unity of the ranks as the leadership centre of Chongryon. You should look after him well in such situation, and I would feel delighted just if he is in good health.
The love of Kim Jong Il for the veteran revolutionary, who defended the soul of the Korean nation in Japan and led an eventful career for the motherland, was the crystallization of warm and noble revolutionary comradeship.
