President Xi underlines need to guarantee safety of people’s lives and property

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently issued an important directive in connection with many casualties caused by the collapse of a motorway in a city of Guangdong Province.
He said that all energies should be directed to conducting a proper rescue operation and giving good first aid to injured persons on the spot and referred to the need to step up the repair of damaged road and restore a traffic order as soon as possible.
There were heavy rains in some areas and strong convection phenomenon appeared to cause different kinds of accidents and disasters, he said, calling on all areas and relevant sectors to guarantee the safety of lives and property of the masses of the people and social stability by heightening a sense of responsibility, perfecting an emergency reserve plan and finding out and removing dangerous places existing in priority areas and key fields in time.
On May 1, the surface collapsed in a motorway section of the city of Guangdong Province at dawn and thus 20 vehicles rolled down. Forty-eight persons died and thirty others were injured as of May 2.
The ministries of emergency management and traffic transport dispatched a working group to guide the rescue operation. Relevant institutions of the city and the province have conducted search and rescue operations, giving first aid to injured persons and resuming traffic.
