West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

June 19 is a meaningful day that marks the 60 th anniversary when Chairman Kim Jong Il started his work at the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK).

Greeting the day, the Korean people are recalling with deep emotion the sacred traces left by Chairman Kim Jong Il on his first day at the Central Committee of the WPK.

A few episodes below that happened on June 19, 1964, tell us about the lofty traits Chairman Kim Jong Il had shown as a leader for the people and the great ambition he had pursued as a great successor to the socialist cause of Juche.

I am Going to Share the Same Office Room with Colleagues

It happened on the first day when Chairman Kim Jong Il started his career at the Central Committee of the WPK.

Officials of the Party Central Committee greeted him and led him to one of the rooms that had been specially prepared for him.

It was a plain room furnished with a few items including a desk, table, chairs and a cabinet.

Yet, he declined the room, saying he does not need an exclusive office as he wanted to share the same room with his colleagues.

When the officials repeatedly asked him to use the room that had been prepared for him, he insisted on sharing the same room, saying that he is not special and is one of many soldiers who remain loyal to President Kim Il Sung .

He put his table together with others and started his first day of work.

Revolutionaries are the First to Have Early Morning Air

On the first day of his work at the Central Committee of the WPK, Chairman Kim Jong Il worked all night in his office until the day dawned.

Early in the morning, he took a stroll in the garden enjoying the fresh air. He said to the accompanying officials that the morning air seemed to clear away his fatigue. Many people are aware of the good sides of morning air but not as many people are the first to actually breathe the morning air like us, he said.

The officials listened attentively to his meaningful remarks. He continued with deep emotion: President Kim Il Sung used to burn the midnight oil drawing up the plan for the country’s liberation during the period of anti-Japanese armed struggle. Then he greeted daybreak, walking on the dewed grass and taking in the fresh morning air before anyone else. Even after liberation (on August 15, 1945), he was still the first to greet the new morning of Korea, spending the whole night thinking about the building of a new society.

At the end, Chairman Kim Jong Il stressed that revolutionaries are the first to have early morning air.

Workers’ Party of Korea as the Eternal Party of Comrade Kim Il Sung

Chairman Kim Jong Il who worked overnight until the crack of dawn on his first day at the Central Committee of the WPK, was walking in the garden with the officials.

He saw the flag flying on the office building of the Party Central Committee and said that it is the flag of victory, glory, and revolution that was carried on amid harsh trials and stormy seas, and that the history of the Party flag could be traced back to the days when President Kim Il Sung formed the Down-with-Imperialism Union (on 17 October, 1926) and held aloft the red flag of revolution. He looked back with deep emotion on the revolutionary history of President Kim Il Sung etched on the Party flag.

He then solemnly declared that we should go on flying the red flag and that he considers it his lifetime task to strengthen our Party as the eternal Party of President Kim Il Sung .

The WPK flag of Juche today continues to fly higher under the leadership of respected Comrade Kim Jong Un , General Secretary of the WPK, as desired by Chairman Kim Jong Il . Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un is strengthening and developing the WPK forever into the Party of Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism as well as the motherly Party which assumes full responsibility for the destiny of all the people.

Chairman Kim Jong Il made a noteworthy contribution to the building of a revolutionary Party and the victorious advance of the socialist cause. His feats will be handed down for generations to come.
