International Criticism Run High Against U.S. and West for Misusing “Responsibility to Protect” to Interfere in Other Countries

Recently, the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly discussed the issue on the responsibility to protect and the prevention of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity. At that time, criticism was on the rise against the U.S. and the West who are misusing “responsibility to protect” as a means to interfere in the internal affairs of the developing countries and to pressurize them.

Cuba, Nicaragua, Indonesia, Nigeria and many other countries also said that they oppose the act of using the “responsibility to protect” as a political means to infringe upon sovereignty and interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states and as a tool to put pressure by force.

They also stressed that if the West has a real interest in protecting civilians and preventing inhumane crimes, they should first put an end to the atrocities committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip and revoke unilateral coercive measures of threatening the right to existence and development of independent countries.

In particular, citing examples from the past catastrophes in Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq and Yugoslavia, Russia strongly denounced the military intervention by the West and NATO as an act of undermining the peace and security of the region as they were aimed at seeking regime change and bringing down of governments.

Venezuela, in the joint statement published in the name of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the UN, expressed objection to all acts pursuing interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and political, economic and military pressure through selective application of “responsibility to protect” on the developing countries without international consensus.

The international community commented that the U.S and the West are seeking to interfere in the internal affairs and regime change in other sovereign states under the pretext of “responsibility to protect” which fuel up disputes and conflicts. It strongly called for every country to fully observe the main principles of the UN Charter including the respect for sovereignty of all countries and their territorial integrity.
