Recently, back-to-back scandals within Japan’s “Self-Defense Forces” are attracting sharp criticism at home and abroad.
“Tokyo Shimbun" and other major media in Japan revealed that the ground “Self-Defense Forces” leaked out confidential information and that the servicemen of the maritime “Self-Defense Forces” received substantial sums of payoffs from businesspersons.
This led to punishment of 218 of its members including the staff chief of the maritime “Self-Defense Forces”.
Regarding this incident, the media commented that it is the first time for the defense ministry to discipline 200-plus staff members of the “Self-Defense Forces”, including its commanding officer, and claimed that the rapid increase in defense capabilities during the Abe administration is in the background and it is a stark aftermath of military expansion line of the Liberal Democratic Party.
The Abe administration permitted the exercise of the right to “collective self-defense” which had so far been regarded as unconstitutional by successive cabinets and also adopted the “Security Law” allowing the “Self-Defense Forces” to fight wars, a far deviation from its original mission of “total defense”.
The current Kishida administration also went astray from the “peace constitution” and is pushing on with the increase of military expenditure and possession of “capability to attack enemy base”, the media noted.
It stressed that the Japanese authorities is making a bid to embellish the “Self-Defense Force” as if it won trust of the international community for the past 70 years since its foundation, but “raising tax for military expansion” is jeopardizing the very existence of the “Self-Defense Forces”, for which not only the defense ministry but also the current administration should be held accountable.
The Liberal Democratic Party government is squandering the tax squeezed out of its people to push on with the military expansion under the pretext of countering the non-existent “threat from its neighbors” while pursuing personal gain. It is all too fitting for the Japanese people to blame the government.
