“Teach more practical knowledge as plainly as possible!”—this is the motto of Kim Myong Sim, a teacher at Tongdaewon Primary School in Tongdaewon District, Pyongyang.
As a holder of master’s degree in pedagogy, she has conceived many new teaching methods conducive to educational practice. She was highly appreciated at the national teaching methods and experience sharing symposium on different occasions.
According to the principal of the school, Kim is good at keeping young children engrossed in study throughout the 40-minute lesson.
In fact, it did not come easily.
In Juche 95 (2006), when she graduated from Pyongyang Teachers Training College and appointed to the school, Kim was unusually ambitious. But as she taught children who tend to get easily impatient and distraught, her hope gradually turned into disappointment.
Once she looked into the classroom where her students were taking an annual examination. Seeing some of her students going through the mill in a vain attempt to solve problems, she felt a prick of guilt.
Afterwards, she realized that she was to blame for the low performance of her students. She began to redouble her efforts to build her capacity. To improve her teaching skills, she sought guidance from academics at a relevant college, and at times visited the National Acrobatic Troupe to learn magic tricks to apply them to lesson. While in lesson, she performed tricks to make the students stay focused.
This helped boost the cognitive effect among them.
To take another example, she taught students 24-, 48- and 96-times tables to help them calculate faster and more easily.
As a result, all the classmates got versed in two-digit multiplication and her class excelled itself at the mathematics exam.
Referring to her lesson, Ri Myong Gang, one of her disciples who attends Pyongyang Secondary School No. 1, said they longed for her lesson and they were really content with her mathematics lesson in which she raised a problem with its solution and they had to tackle the process. It seemed to us that we became a film director whereas she was an actress, he added.
In August Kim was honoured with the title of a meritorious person of socialist patriotism and awarded a gold ring in recognition of her achievements made in creating and generalizing original teaching methods across the country.
