Ryu Si Ok, a forest ranger at the Jangphung County Forestry Management Station in Kaesong, has devoted herself to turning all mountains in her charge into useful ones.
Decades ago, when she moved to this area following her husband, she was appointed forest ranger. She began to build a tree nursery and greenhouse for saplings, while climbing mountains in her charge almost every day to learn about their landform and forestation.
With a determination to turn the forests into pine-nut and giant chestnut forests, she tried to obtain saplings and read books about forestry.
Once the seeds she had sowed with great efforts failed to sprout, disappointing her. One day she stayed up all night at the nursery trying to revive the withering saplings.
She worked hard to increase the areas of forests and always found herself on mountains to keep them from harmful insects or forest fire.
Whenever her children asked her what made her so fond of forest, she would say that the thicker the forests grow, the richer the country and its families become.
Thus, she has built more than a thousand hectares of forests.
In recognition of her devotion, she was invited to the conference of activists in the general mobilization movement for land management and awarded the title of the Merited Ranger.
