Among the past crimes committed by Japan against humanity is its plundering of the marine resources in Korea.
Japan, which had already been illegally catching fish in Korea’s seas, buckled down to the exploitation of marine resources in real earnest after it militarily occupied Korea at the beginning of the last century.
It enforced a “law on fishing” in a bid to expand its right to fishing and monopolize the marine resources in Korea.
It went on to cook up different draconian laws systematically to forcibly restrain the fishing activities by Korean fishermen and provide favourable conditions to the Japanese.
Each Japanese fisherman caught fish in the Korean fishing grounds seven or eight times as many as his peers in Japan. This speaks volumes about how much fish Japan caught in Korea.
Besides, Japan forcibly gathered quality seaweeds like kelp through “inspection regulations” of every description and sold them at exorbitant prices in international market to earn big profits.
Not content with the seizure of the Korean fishing grounds as a whole, it reaped benefits at the expense of many Koreans.
Koreans were compelled to go fishing even in the rough seas, often losing their lives. Their dead bodies were even used as bait.
A witness recalled: “There are no occupiers or plunderers in the world who did not murder local people. But they will not be so much cruel and atrocious as the Japanese who killed innocent people and used their bodies as bait. We must make Japan pay dearly for its outrageous plunder of our country’s natural resources.”
