The ENT and HN Department of the Tumour Institute of the Academy of Medical Sciences are striving to improve the quality of medical services for patients with obstinate diseases.
Recently a research team of the department has introduced a radical operation method for preserving parathyroid glands during surgery of thyroid tumour.
In general, a patient with thyroid cancer needs to receive an operation for removing cancer tissue.
The four parathyroid glands attached to the thyroid gland are so small that they can be easily excised during the operation. Removal of only one of parathyroid glands will lead to their dysfunction, resulting in abnormal symptoms like shaking hand or finger paralysis. In a serious case, respiratory disorders develop, threatening the life.
Having realized the necessity of new operation methods, the researchers repeated anatomical studies of the focuses and simulated operations, in the course of which they conceived a method of separating parathyroid glands first and then removing cancer tissue from the thyroid gland before transplanting parathyroid glands again. Then they confirmed operation processes. They succeeded in the first operation after scores of experiments. The method proved effective in preserving parathyroid glands.
They also developed an effective operation method for preserving recurrent nerve.
