Soon after Korea was liberated from the Japanese military occupation on August 15, 1945, many difficulties cropped up on the road ahead of its people in their effort to build a new country.
On October 9, Juche 34 (1945), Comrade Kim Il Sung visited the Kangson Steel Plant (present-day Chollima Steel Complex).
During their occupation of Korea, the Japanese imperialists had built the plant for their aggressive war efforts, into which they had drafted many Koreans and worked them like beasts. Just prior to their defeat, they had destroyed various production lines and burned all technical documents.
Worse still, most of the workers had left the plant after the national liberation.
Upon his arrival at the plant, Kim Il Sung , warmly shaking hands with its officials and workers, asked them about the sufferings they had undergone under the colonial tyranny of the Japanese imperialists.
After acquainting himself in detail with the number of the workers and electric furnaces and the scope of the damage of the plant, he said to them that their country had been liberated from the Japanese colonial rule once and for all and they were now the masters of the country and the plant who would shoulder the destiny of the liberated country.
Our success in building a liberated Korea as a prosperous and powerful democratic, independent and sovereign state depends on the struggle of you, workers; the working class at the Kangson Steel Plant should be the vanguards in the efforts to build a democratic nation; what you should do at present is to rehabilitate the plant instead of merely standing guard over the idle plant; it is none other than you who should do this, he said.
Then he advised them how to rehabilitate the plant and added: In their flight, the Japanese imperialists declared that Koreans could not reconstruct the plant with their own effort and technique within ten years; but if you pool your efforts and wisdom, you can do anything; by rehabilitating the plant as soon as possible and producing steel, you should demonstrate the might of the working class of liberated Korea.
The workers of the plant rose up in response to his strong appeal. They finally rehabilitated electric furnace No. 1 by December that year and started production.
