One day in February Juche 82 (1993), Chairman Kim Jong Il said to officials: Mass sports are not conducted briskly these days; our country is called a country of people living a long life, but it is impossible for them to enjoy a long life without taking exercise; they can live long in good health only when they do exercise a lot; some people find it difficult to move when they are over 80 years of age; it is because they do not take exercise regularly.
After referring to the necessity of exercise for a long life in good health, he stressed the need to create a social climate of conducting mass sports activities so as to ensure everybody takes exercise.
Then he continued: Jogging should be widely encouraged; it is the best exercise for strengthening the legs and retarding their aging; officials should take the lead in setting an example in jogging and create a social climate of doing exercise so that the whole country can be lively and all the people can prepare themselves fully for labour and national defence.
