Korean folk dance is featured by elegant arm movements forming a gentle curve.
Dance movements are all performed along curved tracks, so they leave a strong impression on the viewers.
Accompanied by enlivening Korean tune, the folk dance is characterized by charming touch and rhythmic gusto.
Such formative and rhythmic nature of the folk dance has been refined and polished over a long historical period as suited to the physical constitution of the Korean people and the sense of beauty unique to them who like soft and gentle manner.
The Korean ceramics, the sleeves of traditional costumes and the upward hips of traditional tile-roofed Korean houses are all curved-shaped to present formative and balanced qualities.
As such qualities are reflected in the dance movements, Korean folk dance is visually and intuitively rich in national flavour.
In addition, the Korean dance movements give a vivid description of the working life, folk holiday making, and customs and manners of the Korean people. They also reflect their struggle to defend the country from foreign invasion and cynicism and sarcasm about feudal rulers.
The national costumes the dancers wear make the folk dance stand out in terms of national flavour. The Korean traditional costumes with elaborate curves add to the formative and rhythmic qualities of the Korean dance.
The dancers perform with such traditional musical instruments, daily necessities and working tools as janggo (hourglass-shaped drum), drum, towel, mask, basket, hoe and sickle, thus giving a more vivid description of the customs of the Korean nation.
As Korean folk dance is based on national costumes, tune and rhythms in representation, it is so popular among all the Korean people.
