Soktamgugok, a well-known scenic spot on the west coast, is situated in Soktam-ri, Pyoksong County, South Hwanghae Province.
Sohyon School nestles in the fifth valley named Unbyong which is the most beautiful in the place.
It was a local private education institution in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910). There are three gates and a lecture hall on the east and west and a shrine and houses for monuments are situated on the north and west. All the structures are beautifully painted. Yogum Gazebo stands in front of the three gates and the Chonggye Shrine, the original building of the school, is found some distance away from the gazebo. The lecture hall named Unbyongjongsa, Chonggye Shrine and Yogum Gazebo all showcase the excellent architectural skills of the Korean ancestors.
The old giant trees, including Soktam zelkova and gingko designated as living monuments, grow in the place, adding much to the beauty of its surroundings.
