The Yakjon Farm in Sukchon County, South Phyongan Province, has more than 1 000 hectares of cultivated land. As manageress, Kim Song Hui is instrumental in reaping a rich harvest of grains every year and improving the living standards of farmers.

With short stature and confident voice, she graduated from a senior middle school more than 30 years ago. Now she has risen from an ordinary rural girl to the manageress in charge of a farm. This is unthinkable apart from her painstaking efforts devoted to the land.

The land doesn’t lie. It yields crops as much as you have devoted yourself to it. If you want to be a true master of this land, you should work hard to improve its fertility—this was the request of her father who had worked all his life in the agricultural sector and died while working.

She has cherished this in mind all her life. After she graduated from the then agricultural college, she worked as a technical instructor, sub-workteam leader and workteam leader at a neighbouring farm and then was promoted to the current position.

Aware that a genuine farmer needs to be well versed in all farm work and knowledge of modern agricultural science and technology, she strove hard to introduce advanced technologies and methods and good experience in farming practice.

She paid attention to raising soil fertility, selecting high-yielding seeds and introducing scientific method of spraying growth stimulants by drone, which are pressing issues in farming.

“The key to a high yield is to fulfil all farming processes including manure production, rice transplanting, weeding, fertilizer application and harvesting exactly within their optimal periods without skipping even a single day,” said Kim.

She motivated the farmers to work hard for agricultural production by applying a correct field responsibility system within the framework of workteam and sub-workteam management systems in conformity to their specific conditions.

This year, too, the farm overfulfilled its quota in the national grain production plan by doing two grain crop farming. Besides, it helped a backward farm produce a high yield.

With the awareness that it is a duty of farmers and obligation of citizens to produce much grain, she is now busying herself with the preparations for the next year’s farming.

She participated in important national conferences including the seventh and eighth congresses of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the national conference of activists in the agricultural sector and was honoured with the title of Labour Hero.

She is a deputy to the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK.
