West Coast Exchange, North Korea Watcher Conference, Sept. 2026

Offshore farming is going full steam ahead in South Hamgyong Province.

The employees of the South Hamgyong provincial fishermen’s cooperative management committee direct steady efforts to shallow-sea culture to open up a bright prospect for production after producing thousands of tons of kelp, seaweed and mussels.

All fishermen's cooperatives have sufficiently secured motorboats, lighters, ropes, rafts and anchors and ensure that their employees manure and cultivate kelp, seaweed and mussels on a scientific and technical basis according to seasons, weather, seawater temperature and different stages of growth.

The cultivators of the Sinchang Fishermen’s Cooperative produced more than 100 tons of kelp per hectare this year by introducing an advanced manuring and cultivation method. And they completed the preparations for production in a short period and finished the sowing of Undaria pinnatifida and mussels in the right time.

In particular, they doubled the per-hectare kelp output by introducing the horizontal and dense kelp farming method, which was believed to be impossible outside the bay. On the basis of this achievement, they boosted the production of sea cucumber and sea urchin by raising them in an efficient way, while increasing the floor-based kelp cultivation ground to several hectares since its economic effectiveness has been proved.

The cooperative pushes forward with the reinforcement of establishments for sea culture as it directs efforts to securing materials including ropes and floats.

It also pays attention to multiplying marine resources. Shortly ago, it released young sea cucumbers and sea urchins it had grown healthily at the cultivation ground built by itself into the waters of the cultivation ground.

The Manchun, Pongsu and Riphung fishermen’s cooperatives carried out their kelp production plans ahead of schedule and made substantial preparations for next year’s production by securing tens of thousands of metres of ropes and hundreds of rafts and anchors. And they directed a great deal of energies to the scientific manuring and cultivation of the Undaria pinnatifida, oyster and mussel whose sowing had been finished.

The Sinho Fishermen’s Cooperative increased the cultivation area of mussel and manured and tended it to suit the different stages of its growth to ensure their fast growth.

The Ssangam Fishermen’s Cooperative and several other units have built artificial culture rooms well and released young sea cucumber and sea urchin and fries of flatfish grown healthily by advanced cultivation methods into the waters of the cultivation ground in time, thus providing a guarantee for multiplying marine resources and enhancing the per-hectare productivity of marine products.
