On December 12, 1948, Comrade Kim Il Sung went to the firing ground on Phyongchon Plain (what is now Phyongchon District, Pyongyang) for the test-fire of the submachine guns made by the Korean workers.
After he picked one from the gun rack, he said with satisfaction that it was well made, adding that today we would demonstrate the might of the resourceful and talented Korean people to the whole world, and that the gun was permeated with the talents of the enterprising and courageous Korean people and their indomitable revolutionary fighting spirit, as well as the red blood shed by the anti-Japanese revolutionary forerunners.
Then he sat at the firing table to test-fire the gun.
The shooting sound heralded the birth of the Juche-oriented defence industry and marked a solemn declaration of history reflecting the will of the country to glorify the Korean revolution, which had started and won victory with arms, with the same means forever.
After the test-fire, he said: How many people shed their blood to get a rifle when we were waging the anti-Japanese armed struggle. But today we have made weapons by our own efforts. This is quite laudable. It is important for us to have the spirit of doing anything by ourselves.
He had worked heart and soul to this end.
Soon after Korea’s liberation on August 15, 1945, he chose the site of the first munitions factory in the country and, unfolded a plan to expand and develop the country’s munitions industry in the future with it as a foundation.
He sent the factory a sample submachine gun, veteran technicians and skilled workers selected from across the country and new-generation specialists in arms manufacture trained at the Central Security Officers Training School, and provided the arsenal with necessary machines and equipment. His meticulous guidance brought the day of the test-fire of the first submachine gun.
That day Kim Il Sung said that the manufacture of submachine gun by Korean workers and technicians with their own efforts and technology is the first victory of the country’s munitions industry and another proud success achieved by the Korean people in building a new country.
Today the DPRK is demonstrating its might as an invincible military power capable of manufacturing any modern weapons at its will.
The place where the historic test-fire of the first submachine gun was conducted has been turned into the Phyongchon Revolutionary Site dedicated to his revolutionary exploits.
