Ko Kum Gang is a fourth-dan (grade) player at the Pyongyang Municipal Taekwon-Do Team.
From childhood he was attached to Taekwon-Do, a traditional martial art of the Korean nation. He acquired the basic Taekwon-Do techniques at the Taekwon-Do group of his senior middle school, and in 2019 he started his career at a professional team.
That year he took the first place at the third-grade individual pattern of the junior category of the 21st ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships held in Bulgaria and did his part in leading his team to come first in the group pattern and self-defence.
In addition, he won champion's belts and gold medals at the high-grade pattern of the 22nd ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships held in Kazakhstan in 2023 and other tournaments.
His perfect pattern movements which require power, balance, accuracy, breathing and rhythm won him admiration of experts and spectators.
Experts said that he is unusually good at kicking, adding that he is correct in terms of end point, speed, power and track of kicking.
Honour does not come of itself. Once he was fatally diagnosed that he cannot practise any longer due to severe dislocation of shoulder joint. However, he received medical treatment and trained himself hard with a dogged determination to devote himself to bringing honour to the homeland of Taekwon-Do, thus successively winning the annual national championships.
His win at the individual fourth-grade pattern of the 10th ITF Taekwon-Do Asian championships held in India last August is unthinkable apart from his painstaking efforts.
He was honoured with Kim Il Sung Youth Honour Prize. He says he would demonstrate the prestige of the country by Taekwon-Do.
