Last year a robot contest of general education sector was held at Pyongyang Teachers Training College, drawing the attention of academic circles.
The contest was attended by kindergarteners and primary, junior and senior middle school students selected from all provinces with the robots made by them.
Divided into provinces and school types, each group of three contestants manufactured a robot with which to deal with a given situation.
In the kindergarteners’ category, the robot had to choose the right one from among several picture cards and return to the starting place after going round the turn.
“Preschool children like drawing or making something. While making or drawing what they have learnt at kindergarten and experienced in their life, they take a fancy to making them movable. Robot education is very good and effective for children in developing their conception, imagination and independence,” said Han Hyang Ran, teacher at Kinmaul Kindergarten No. 1 in Moranbong District, Pyongyang.
In the primary school students’ category, the robot had to pick a thing weighing about 10g with its arm and make a 12m-long round trip, dodging obstacles on track. The winner was decided according to right choice and speed.
The junior and senior middle school students’ category was more challenging. What was under consideration for assessment was not only the manufacture and control technology of robots but also their practicality, especially the possibility of their introduction into workplace, their educational adaptability and performance.
The robots, most of them for transport, were designed to identify loads weighing more than 10kg and carry them avoiding obstacles with the help of ultrasonic distance sensors and come back exploring a 20m shuttle course with infrared rays or laser beam sensors.
“The contest showed that children and students are at a high intellectual level. Seeing the movements of the robots made and programmed by themselves, they keenly felt the necessity for a wider range of knowledge. The event highlighted many talented students in mathematics, engineering, arts and mechanics,” said Ri Chol Ho, a department chief at Pyongyang Teachers Training College.
