The 13th Meeting of the Political Bureau of the Seventh Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea held in June 2020 discussed as an important agenda item the construction of 50 000 flats in Pyongyang by 2025 which would mark the 80th founding anniversary of the WPK, on the initiative of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un .
Later, the Eighth Congress of the WPK adopted it as its decision to build 50 000 flats in Pyongyang by completing 10 000 flats every year.
The first batch of the construction project started in the Songsin and Songhwa area.
Kim Jong Un repeatedly stressed the need to prevent similarity, repetition and imitation in architectural designs and always take an innovative approach. As regards the housing construction in the Songsin and Songhwa area he ensured that new and modern styles completely different from those in the past were contained in the architectural designs.
The initial plan made by designers was little different from the past street formation in the layout and profile of dwelling houses and other buildings.
Saying that the buildings on the street were symmetrically arranged on both sides of the main road as in the past, he noted that the design should embrace neighbourhood serving amenities while making the height of buildings different and connecting the socles in a big way. And he saw to it that an overpass with a large LED screen and the perforated buildings were set up across the street so that it could give an intuitive impression that architectural styles are changing.
In addition, he, referring to the need to build an 80-storeyed apartment house in the area, said that it could be built by adding 20 storeys to the 60-storeyed apartment block designated as the symbolic building of the street if the geological condition of the area permitted.
This was how the 80-storeyed apartment house was included in the layout plan.
During the construction he examined at least 540 blueprints including those layouts and designs for individual and public buildings and main road in two months alone.
