The DPRK successfully sent an earth observation satellite Kwangmyongsong-4 into space on February 7, 2016, consolidating its position as a state with application satellite.
It was decades ago that the country started its space programme.
After launching some satellites, it finally succeeded in sending Kwangmyongsong 3-2 into space in December 2012, which meant its space programme entered the practical phase.
Since then, great efforts have been made to bolster up the independence and Juche character of space industry with its material and technical foundations built up further and further.
Today the space programme is gaining fresh momentum under the unified guidance of the State.
With an eye to operating weather observation satellite, earth observation satellite and communications satellite, the country works to apply space sci-tech achievements to different sectors such as agriculture, fishery, meteorological observation, communications, prospecting, land management and disaster prevention.
Amid the nationwide, all-society and all-people concern and support, the work for the growth of space industry proceeds apace in all aspects.
Seminars are held on a regular basis to build on the achievements made in the field of space science and technology, and brisk efforts are made to open up a new scientific field of key importance in space exploration and use.
Higher-education institutions have set up space-related faculties and departments concerning aerospace, space observation and satellite communications to train talents badly needed for the development of space industry.
Relevant research groups, which have been put in place at the State Academy of Sciences and universities, work on projects to cope with extreme weather, effectively protect and make the most of the natural resources of the country and stimulate the scientific development of the national economy.
