In March 1996 Chairman Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) visited a post on Mt Taedok on his inspection tour of the frontline units.
The post was a stone’s throw from the enemy position, so it was an extremely dangerous place in which any slightest movement might lead to an instant clash between both sides.
However, the Chairman climbed onto the observation post overlooking the enemy post and had photos taken with soldiers.
All the while, the accompanying officials were so worried about his safety that they earnestly requested him in the evening as follows: “Please, don’t go to the frontline areas any more. This is more than our mind.”
After having a thoughtful look at them for a while, he said that he could fully understand how they felt and he was thankful for it.
Looking southward as if he was picturing the soldiers at the frontline posts in his mind, he said: Many of my sons and daughters are defending the country at the frontline posts. I should learn about the service life of my sons and daughters who are on guard duty on the front line and encourage them. So I have to go to the front line.
