The 14th National People’s Sports Contest opened with due ceremony at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium in the DPRK on February 25.
The sports contest will be held in Pyongyang and various other places of the country, divided into a professional sports field and a general field (category of provinces and category of ministries and national agencies). Tens of events including football, basketball, volleyball, table-tennis, weightlifting, gymnastics, Taekwon-do, ice hockey and ssirum (Korean wrestling) will be held during the contest.
Present at the opening ceremony were Premier Pak Thae Song, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and chairman of the National Sports Guidance Committee, members of the National Sports Guidance Committee, officials concerned, sportspersons and working people.
Kim Il Guk, minister of Physical Culture and Sports, made an opening address.
He said that the 14th National People’s Sports Contest will be held to instil greater confidence in victory and optimism into the people of the country who have turned out in the struggle for creation and increased production in 2025 under the guidance of the great Party Central Committee.
Expressing belief that the contest would be a significant occasion in further instilling enthusiasm for the revolution and patriotism into all the people waging a dynamic struggle for the comprehensive national rejuvenation, he declared the 14th National People’s Sports Contest open.
At the end of the ceremony, there took place a march-past of each participating organization, followed by a Taekwon-Do demonstration.
Then a men's volleyball game between Pyongyang and Ryanggang Province belonging to the general field (the category of provinces) was held.
