It happened on the afternoon of October 10, 1950, when the Korean People’s Army units were temporarily retreating for a strategic purpose during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953).
Young Kim Jong Il (February 16, 1942-December 17, 2011) began to shovel off young pine-nut trees saying that he would transplant them to a sunny hillside near his home together with his younger sister to mark the anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
Officials helped him dig the trees with care lest their roots were hurt and separated from earth, and made preparations for planting.
Kim Jong Il and his sister began to dig holes for the trees.
Despite the repeated request by the officials, he would not stop digging saying digging the holes is important in planting trees.
After a while, he told his sister that each of them would plant a tree, and moved a tree with the help of the officials.
His sister asked him if the pine-nut tree is a good species.
He said to her as follows: Pine-nut tree is a very good species. It is evergreen and highly resistant to cold and snowstorm in winter. In autumn leaves fall from other trees, but the tree remains green. Furthermore, it bears lots of nuts.
He added: The trees are now young but when we water and tend them carefully every day, they will grow high and bear nuts in large numbers. Then, let us come here with father. He will be pleased to see the trees.
The following day Kim Jong Il met an official who was to start for the Supreme Headquarters. He confidently told him: The Yankees invaded our country to occupy it. But they can never conquer our country. If they burn a tree, we should plant ten or a hundred trees to make our mountains and fields greener. By the time these trees grow up healthy, our country will become the richest in the world.
