The theme of this year’s World TB Day (March 24) is “We can stop TB: commit, invest, deliver.”
Tuberculosis can be both prevented and cured. For three years until 2023, COVID-19 pandemic replaced TB as one of the major fatal diseases caused by an infectious agent. Now TB has resurfaced, causing deaths, twice as high as those by HIV/AIDS. Over 10 million people are stricken by TB every year, the figure showing signs of year-on-year increase.
The global combat on TB calls for taking action to implement the commitments made at the second UN high-level meeting on TB in 2023, at which the UN sustainable development goals and the targets of the WHO’s End TB Strategy were reaffirmed and targets between 2023 and 2027 were renewed.
According to the commitments, efforts will be made to cut TB incidence and mortality and relieve patients and their families of their financial burdens.
They also embrace TB prevention geared to promoting universal medical service and social protection, diagnosis and treatment, multi-sectoral cooperation aimed at addressing a wide range of social and economic issues affecting TB, and technical solutions such as development of TB vaccines.
With a TB vaccination system in place, the DPRK runs a regular vaccination programme that offers the working population access to TB screening and relevant procedures.
The people are encouraged to have regular morning exercise and jog to enhance their resistance, observe the hygienic requirements and keep their workplace and homes clean.
