The industrial crops institute of the Academy of Agricultural Science has established a technology of breeding and cultivating good species of oil-bearing and sugar crops suited to the geographical and climatic features of the country and strongly resistant to high temperature, drought, cold, salt and pests.
Now the technology of cultivating a new variety of sugar beet strongly resistant to high temperature, damage by moisture, maroon spot and root rot and with a higher sugar content and per-hectare yield is being introduced into various units across the country.
The researchers at the institute solved the problem of ensuring the optimal temperature for growth, which is important in sugarcane cultivation, by planting nodes and growing them in a greenhouse heated by solar energy from mid-October to mid-April the following year, thus raising the per-hectare yield considerably.
In the course of an in-depth study of the biological characteristics of sugarcane, they proved that it is quite possible to increase the yield of the crop if its resistance to rainstorm and high winds is improved, and thereby provided a sure guarantee for a high and stable yield.
Building on the successes and experience gained in the research into rape and sunflower species, they embraced new approaches for cultivating new species of rape and oil flax with higher resistance to blight and drought, higher oil content and per-hectare yield. This will make a great contribution to providing raw materials for oil production to the newly-built regional industrial factories.
They have also identified the first-generation hybrid of sunflower that is suited to the local climatic and soil conditions, appropriate in terms of nutritional indices, period of growth and stem length and rich in oil content. They are now working on a project to develop its production and seed selection technology.
