The Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences conducted a field survey and estimation of the quantity of water bird resources in the wintering period from January 14 to February 6.
The recent survey covered the water birds wintering in 71 wetlands, including the Mundok and Kumya migratory bird reserves which are on the list of international reserves.
During the survey over 46 000 water birds of 55 species were observed, with spot-billed duck, coot, mallard, Aythya ferina and Tadorna tadorna among dominant species.
Also found were such globally endangered and vulnerable species as Ciconia boyciana (EN), Numenius madagascariensis (EN), Aythya ferina (VU), Clangula hyemalis (VU), Podiceps grisegena (VU), and Grus monachal (VU).
According to the survey findings, the water birds wintering in the wetlands on the west coast, including the estuaries of the Taedong, Chongchon and Ryesong rivers and Ryulpho Reservoir outnumbered those in the wetlands on the east coast.
In particular, the observation in Kumsong Tideland of Numenius madagascariensis which used to appear in March reveals that mating features of birds are changing due to abnormal global climate.
