President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) embarked on the road of struggle for the country and people in his teens. And in the initial period of his revolutionary activities he founded the Juche idea that the masses of the people are the masters of the revolution and construction and that they have the power of advancing the revolution and construction, that is, they are the masters of their own destiny and they are also capable of shaping their destiny.
Since then, the Korean revolution has advanced along the road of independence.
During the anti-Japanese armed struggle to liberate the country from the Japanese imperialists’ military occupation (1905-1945), he imbued the guerrillas with the conviction that they should not pin hope on foreign aid but fight the aggressors by making weapons by their own efforts.
Under the slogan of liberating the country by dint of self-reliance, which he advanced, the guerrillas waged an arduous armed struggle for more than ten years and finally won back their country on August 15, 1945.
After the liberation of the country, he set forth the line that Korea should follow the road to democracy of the Korean style, not that of any other countries, and founded the Party, the state and the army on the basis of the line.
During the hard-fought Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) to repulse the aggression by the US imperialists, he put forward original tactics like tunnel warfare and aircraft-hunting team movement. By applying these tactics, the Korean army annihilated the aggressors and won victory in the war.
After the war was over, he advanced the original line of economic construction on giving priority to the development of heavy industry while simultaneously developing light industry and agriculture and led the Korean people to overcome flunkeyism and dogmatism and advance straight along the road of independence.
In the mid-1980s when the wind of “reform” and “openness” swept several socialist countries, he firmly maintained the independent stand and led his country to hold the red flag higher. As a result, the red flag of socialism could invariably flutter in the DPRK alone even in the face of the political upheaval which shook the world.
The banner of independence upheld by Kim Il Sung still serves as an immutable banner of the DPRK.
