Last year, agricultural workers at the Kumchon Vegetable Farm in Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, moved into new houses amid the new era of rural development being ushered in true to the plan of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
Good Place to Live in
“My house is over there in the village which looks like a picture,” said sub-workteam leader Kim Jong Hak as he feasted his eyes on the view of his farm village.
The farm village located on the outskirts of the capital city has scores of low-storey apartment houses built in a cozy and peculiar way.
An Kum Hyok, manager of the farm, said that in recent three years they have removed old houses and built hundreds of modern ones with the assistance of the state, drastically improving the living environment of the farmers.
Each house has an anteroom, two bedrooms, kitchen, washroom and storeroom to the farmers’ convenience. Clean and neat arrangement of furniture, glossy windowpanes and flowerpots on the windowsills give a glimpse of the healthy way of life of the dwellers.
Trees of good species such as fruit trees and zelkova are growing around the new houses.
“This is really as good as urban life. I have relatives living in town but I never envy them,” said Kim Jong Nyo, a farmer.
Good Place to Work in
Rural civilization in the new era can be found in workplace as well.
Transformation has taken place in the working attitude of those who moved into the new houses, and they are all determined to repay the benevolence of the state by reaping bumper crops, said Rim Chol Gu, deputy manager of the farm.
The farm provides Pyongyang citizens with thousands of tons of vegetables every year by cultivating leaf vegetables and fruit-bearing vegetables such as bok choy, cucumber, tomato and melon in a scientific and technical way while producing lots of organic manure to improve the fertility of paddy and dry fields by its own efforts.
Vegetables of good species are cultivated at the farm’s greenhouse with an area of thousands of square metres.
Farmers are engaged in brisk art group activities singing in praise of their village and farm.
Good prospects of wheat and barley harvest, standardized paddy fields covered with healthy rice seedlings, landscaped and planted gardens and bright looks on the faces of farmers optimistic about their future—this is what you can see now everywhere in the countryside.
