One July day in 1975, Chairman Kim Jong Il gave field guidance at the then Komdok Mine.
After wrapping up his schedule, he came to the railway station to leave the mine. While bidding farewell to the mine’s officials, he saw an official from the Ryongyang Mine.
Kim Jong Il kindly asked the official about the health of the workers at his mine and the production of the mine.
On hearing his answer, Kim Jong Il , looking round the officials accompanying him, said: We should ensure that our workers do not feel any inconvenience in their life. We will provide the mine with more commuter buses, refrigerators and a new ambulance.
As the drizzle was growing thick, an official hurried to open up an umbrella over him.
But Kim Jong Il declined, saying: I am all right with this rain. Our miners work in pits where water is dripping from the ceiling.
Then he asked the official from the mine again if there was anything more that was needed for the mine.
Encouraged by the Chairman’s care, the official, on behalf of the miners, ventured that it would be a great honour if he visited the mine.
After looking towards the mountains in Ryongyang for a while, Kim Jong Il said to the accompanying officials that he would go and see the miners at Ryongyang even if he had to postpone other work and that if the road was too bad to get there by car, he would go without fail even though he had to use train.
Upon arrival at the mine he shook hands with the officials and innovators there. The leader of the workteam of excavator No. 7 at the Kumsan Pit pledged that his workteam would overfulfil its production plan for that year by five times. Looking at the workteam leader with satisfaction, Kim Jong Il praised the miners of the workteam.
Then he said: Our workers are this faithful. We should spare nothing for such workers. Ours is a country for workers.
