One day in July 2008, Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the Ogasan Nature Reserve situated between Jagang Province’s Hwaphyong County and Ryanggang Province’s Kim Hyong Jik County.
The reserve is called a natural treasure house of national value for its rich diversity of animals and plants and their peculiar distribution.
Feasting his eyes on the vast stretch of the peaks, the Chairman told the officials that the Korean people had firmly defended the reserve against the harsh moves of the Japanese imperialists to plunder their country of its natural resources and the flames of the fierce Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953).
When an official told him that the mountain was so named as five beautiful peaks, all rising more than 1 000 metres above sea level, are nestled in a primeval forest, the Chairman said that the explanation of its origin was plausible.
Noting that the primeval forest in the reserve is really wonderful as it has diverse species of many trees hundreds of years old, Kim Jong Il said that the Central Botanical Garden in Pyongyang is an artificial botanical garden and Mt Oga is a natural botanical garden.
He continued to say to the officials that the reserve should be well preserved and managed and that as it has a long history of formation and primeval forest which is home to various rare animals and plants, it should be placed under good preservation to be handed down to the coming generations.
