In February the “light-matter resonant interaction and its applications” proposed by the nonlinear optics research team of the Physics Department of Kim Il Sung University was awarded the natural science prize, which was newly instituted in the DPRK.

In the past, the research team won the February 16 Science and Technology Prize twice for the project related with nonlinear optical phenomena in nanostructures and the study on nonlinear optical phenomena assisted by nano-plasmonic resonances, whose solutions were badly needed in the country.

Four years ago the team launched a project for practical application. Until then they had been involved in theoretical research in the main.

Candidate academician Im Song Jin, Prof and PhD, who led the research team, was not satisfied with the theoretical formulation of basic principles. He held it very important to make a tangible contribution to the country’s economic development by introducing the theoretical research findings into practice.

This is how they began the research to develop an infrared gas analyser badly needed by many units in the metallurgical, chemical and other sectors of the national economy. Despite repeated failures, they pooled their efforts to finally develop the gas analyser with high measurement accuracy and stability in a short span of time.

Looking upon those days, Pae Ji Song, PhD and a member of the research team, said: We applied theoretical research findings to practice to develop an advanced infrared gas analyser based on resonant response of gas materials in mid-infrared wavelengths for the first time in the country. The introduction of this device has provided production units with a new vista for the domestic production of equipment and regular production.

Those who played a leading role in the designing, manufacturing, and introduction of the analyser and establishing its new calibration methods are in their twenties, he added.

In addition, the research team developed and introduced a transmission optical analyser for nanostructures.

According to Ho Kum Song, PhD, the optical analyser is of high economic value as it can be used in measuring and testing nano-products and nano-analytical tools.

Over the past four years, the researchers have made public about 20 papers in SCI or NI international scientific journals, including “Interactions between Plasmonic Nanoantennas and Vortex Beams.”

They also received several national certificates of introduction of sci-tech hits and certificates of registered high-tech products.

The research team was the only one to receive the natural science prize this year for its theoretical research achievement in the sector of nonlinear optics and its practical application.

“It is the duty of our research team to bring about substantial fruitions needed by the state and demanded by the people with the achievements made in the sector of basic science to hold world supremacy,” said Im Song Jin.
