September 16 is International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
The ozone layer of the atmosphere protects living organisms on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
The Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted on September 16, 1987 in a bid to protect the ozone layer vital to human life and global ecological environment. The UN General Assembly in 1994 proclaimed September 16 the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
The theme of this year’s International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer is “From science to global action.” This aims to highlight the important role of science in alerting the world to emerging issues and stress the need to take practical measures for protecting the ozone layer.
At present, to protect the ozone layer is one of the important tasks for the international community to carry on with concerted efforts. Every year, countries around the world honour the world ozone day, conducting various activities to raise public awareness of the importance of the ozone layer protection.
The DPRK joined the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol in 1995, and it has since committed itself to implementing them.
It has amended and supplemented the Law of the DPRK on Prevention of Air Pollution and other laws and regulations, while making sure that institutions, enterprises, organizations and citizens refrain as much as possible from the production, import, sale and use of the ozone layer-depleting substances and the equipment and goods containing those materials.
Efforts are directed to scientific research projects for environmental protection concerning sci-tech problems arising in the use of hydrofluorocarbons and the introduction and generalization of advanced techniques conducive to the protection of the ozone layer and the prevention of global warming.
Meanwhile, publicity campaigns are under way to raise public awareness of the ozone layer protection and climate change.
