November 16 is Mother’s Day in the DPRK.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung attended the First National Conference of Mothers on November 16, 1961, in which he delivered a speech entitled The Duty of Mothers in the Education of Children.
The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un saw to it that this day was set as Mother’s Day and celebrated as a national holiday.
First Mother’s Day
The Fourth National Conference of Mothers was held on November 16, 2012, the day marking the first Mother’s Day.
Kim Jong Un made special efforts to make the day a holiday celebrated nationwide.
Looking at beautiful flowers in bloom, he said that as Mother’s Day was instituted by the state, mothers would be pleased if their children bought flowers for them that day.
In November that year, he told a senior official of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea that it would be good to design and print greeting cards as nicely as the New Year’s cards and sell them to the people on the occasion of the day.
The Fourth National Conference of Mothers took place amid the blessings from across the country, bringing together exemplary women including those with many children, those with adopted orphans, officers’ wives, labour innovators and officials.
At the conference the title of Labour Hero and other high official commendations were awarded to many delegates.
Communist Mother Honour Prize
In December 2023 the Communist Mother Honour Prize was instituted and the Fifth National Conference of Mothers was held in the capital city of Pyongyang.
Twenty women were awarded the first Communist Mother Honour Prize with a gold ring at the event.
It is easy to become a mother, but it is by no means easy to live a brilliant life—a life so upright before her children and before the country.
Acknowledging their devoted lives, Kim Jong Un said in his speech at the Fifth National Conference of Mothers that the credit for the brilliant today of our country goes to our mothers who are ordinary and simple and yet the strongest in the face of any difficulties and have become the genuine models of always devoting themselves unhesitatingly to the road of patriotism as well as the roots for bringing up a large number of heroes in all parts of the country.
