Son Jong Hyok and Son Il Hyok are amateur craftsmen. The twins are workers living in Chollima District of Nampho Municipality.
Their aim was to create a large, decorative flower vase preserving beauty, magnificence and durability, using locally available stone powder, unlike conventional ceramic vases.
As they were not professionals, they were always pressed for time; they had to be on the job in the daytime and conduct a series of data analysis and experiments until late at night. And they sometimes made painstaking efforts in search for materials.
In the course of this they discovered 10-odd kinds of suitable materials and rational ratio of mixture, and finally produced their first work in a year.
After this initial success they strove hard to perfect their techniques for years. The twins presented lacquerware Vase Decorated with Patterns of Pine Tree and Magnolia Flowers , 53cm in diameter, 180cm in height and 40kg in weight, to the 6th national sculpture and craftwork festival in celebration of the 77th founding anniversary of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea held this year.
The craftwork, as it was made with stone powder for the first time in the country, instantly drew the attention of the participants in the festival and won excellent appreciation.
As compared with ceramic vases, this work made by self-hardening stone powder is durable and highly resistant to high and low temperature and humid environment, and can be made in any desired size and shape, and therefore it is quite novel, said experts.
Today the twin craftsmen throw themselves to creating wonderful works with seasoned decorative techniques after their work.
